“When I was 9 or 10 I started hanging with this 14-year-old girl who thought I was possibly the son of [Judas Priest guitarist] K. K. Downing because I had long white, almost blonde hair, and I wore fake leather pants. [Laughs] I just looked like this little rocker kid, so she befriended me and I’d go over to her house and her dad would give us karate lessons. He also was a velvet painter. I went into his bedroom and there were all these velvet paintings with naked chicks. [Laughs] I was like, “Oh my God! These are amazing!”

Hinds: “We didn’t know it, but there were two venues inside this giant place. We played upstairs and Barney played downstairs. He was done by nine, and we went on at ten. All the Barney people – Baby Bop, all the folks in the show – they came on stage with us and sang Creature Lives. It was amazing. We hung out afterwards, drank beer and whiskey…”
Kelliher: “It was something else. You know, the people in the Barney show, they’re just like us. They’re in a tour bus, we’re in a tour bus. They plauy gigs, we play gigs. When I saw Barney was in the house, I told our tour manager, ‘We have got to get a picture with Barney And Friends.’
This is where I was yesterday.
It must have been a grand old time!
Canadian singer-songwriter Feist (you probably best know her for the epic earworm that is “1, 2, 3, 4”) met our very own Brent Hinds while she and Mastodon were filming segments for Later…With Jools Holland. It was then that the two started cooking up ideas:
“Brent and I were nodding at each other, and he’s like, ‘Nice riff,’ and I’m like ‘Nice tone.’ So backstage I’m thinking about letting these two worlds collide, how they should collide, so I’m like ‘How about Metals meeting metal? Brent was like, ‘Well, I do like that ‘Bad in Each Other’ song, I could see that.’ Maybe now I will look into learning to cover ‘Oblivion’… or anything off [The Hunter]. That album’s amazing.”
Sweet, sugary Feist covering “Oblivion”? Sounds odd, but if done right, this could actually work. We’ll have to see, won’t we?
